Seeking a vacation in a resort? Nasugbu, Batangas is a great choice, as it is home to resorts like Chateau Royale Sports and Country Club, which allows for many opportunities to revel in nature and fun adventures. Travelers, especially the weekend warriors, consider Batangas, Philippines as a staple destination for short breaks because of its nearness to Metro Manila. Of course, almost no one leaves the province without bringing home a few sweet treats or “pasalubong”. Here are just a few delicacies you might want to check out:
1. Kapeng barako
Considered as the best-selling product of Batangas, kapeng barako is a local brew from the Liberica coffee variety. The locals prepare this coffee by simply pouring hot water unto the beans and straining the concoction using a cloth. Usually served black, it is commonly sweetened with honey or brown sugar. Kapeng barako can also be used to make espresso-based drinks.
2. Pakaskas
The term is astutely coined because you need to scrap it with your teeth to be able to eat it properly. Pakaskas is made from buli, a local tree that is a variety of the coconut. A pack, consisting of 10 pieces, costs PHP25 to PHP35.
3. Tapang Taal
Tapang Taal gets its rich flavors from the marinade of soy sauce, garlic, calamansi, and pepper. Either grilled or fried, the combined garlicky taste and sweetness of this scrumptious dish is truly overwhelming. This pork viand is best served with fried rice and kapeng barako.
4. Tamarind Products
Another delectable treat that you can buy is the tamarind candy. It is a sweet and sour confection that has become a favorite of both locals and visitors. Tamarind wine, meanwhile, is the latest addition to the locale's string of offerings.
5. Panutsa
Batangas' variant of peanut brittle, panutsa is made of whole peanuts and caramelized brown sugar. You can readily buy this flat disc-shaped sweet for it is available in all bus stations in the province.
6. Ube
For those who love luscious desserts, ube cake is a must-buy before going home from your resort in Nasugbu. Depending on the size, you can purchase these for as low as PHP20 to as much as PHP250. Two varieties are available—the special ube cakes with more ingredients and the regular one.
7. Bagoong Balayan
Most bagoong Balayan are made from dilis and galunggong, two of the best tasting fish in town. This local specialty smells funny but tastes like cheese. It is a salt substitute in Balayan Caesar salad dressing and a common condiment for fish.
8. Meringue
A few stores in Batangas sell specialized meringue using super fine sugar and egg whites baked to perfection. So, after your sun-kissed escapades, make a brief stopover in a “pasalubong” center near the Chateau Royale Sports and Country Club, and get a pack of this product, which amounts to around PHP50.
