Stars of the Capital: 4 Must-See Tourist Attractions in Accra, Ghana

After waking up from a restful sleep at Accra's Luxe Suites hotel, here are some of the attractions you can visit to familiarize yourself with the history and culture of Ghana.

1. Makola Market
The country's centre of trade, Makola Market plays a cultural and social role in the Ghanian society. Fifty-five years after its 1924 construction, the market was demolished, a controversial move by the government to allegedly curb the sale of banned goods. It has since reopened and is now under the watch of the international charity Transaid, a move that would hopefully improve the livelihood of sellers, most of which are women. Makola Market is now one of the most colourful and vibrant scenes in the city, showcasing fresh produce and manufactured goods, alongside the sharp business sense of Ghana's women traders.

2. National Museum
If you wish to know the country's history, head directly to Ghana's National Museum in Central Accra. The museum opened on March 5, 1957, the eve of Ghana's independence and has 3 main galleries. The first focuses on Ghana's history, another features the country's traditions, and the last one showcases the country's artistic heritage. Among the museum's highlights are its exhibits on traditional dance, agriculture, and iron making; Senfu masks from Ivory Coast; a number of Zulu wooden figures and bead-ware from Southern Africa; sculpture garden; and exhibits on the slave trade in Ghana.

3. Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum
The remains of Ghana's first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, rests in a serene memorial park in downtown Accra. The prominent Ghanian leader—whose personal effects, photographs, and documents are also displayed here—was instrumental in liberating the country from British rule, and served as its first prime minister. The 5.3 acres of Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum is also the site of state functions, Ghana's Independence Anniversary Celebrations, and commemoration of Emancipation Day. Among its features are the bronze statue of Kwame Nkrumah, fountains, and the mausoleum itself.

4. National Theatre
A gift from the Chinese government, the National Theatre was opened in 1992 in the Victoriaborg district of Accra, Ghana. The structure has a total area of 11,896 sqm and is located at the junction of the Liberia Road and Independence Avenue. As a venue for popular performances and events, three resident companies call this theatre home: the National Dance Company, National Symphony Orchestra, and National Theatre Players.
